Anni Quaranta. Nello stato americano del Mississippi, dedito ancora prevalentemente all'agricoltura, i bianchi hanno il predominio e guardano con sospetto la popolazione di colore. Lucas Beauchamp, un uomo di colore che ha la reputazione di non rispettare i bianchi e di non sottomettersi, viene ritrovato svenuto all'alba in un campo con in mano una pistola ancora fumante vicino al cadavere di un bianco. Lucas viene subito accusato di assassinio e arrestato e non servono a nulla le sue proteste e le sue dichiarazioni di innocenza: nessuno gli crede. Quando poi chiede a Gavin Stevens, il migliore avvocato dello stato, di rappresentarlo in tribunale, questi, ritenendolo colpevole, rifiuta.
