Il film si collega alle vicende raccontate nell'omonima serie tv britannica.1927: la famiglia Crawley è in subbuglio. Re Giorgio V ha appena annunciato che farà visita all'antica magione di Downton Abbey insieme alla sua famiglia. La dimora del conte di Grantham diventa il quartier generale del maggiordomo del re britannico e di altri membri della servitù di Buckingham Palace. La servitù dei Crawley subisce ogni sorta di umiliazione. Lady Mary è convinta che l'attuale maggiordomo Thomas Barrow non sia in grado di gestire la delicata situazione e decide di richiamare in servizio un vecchio maggiordomo, il Signor Carson, ormai in pensione, affinché presti alla famiglia la sua competenza per la durata della visita reale.
