L'inizio della primavera del 1946 porta il terrore nella placida cittadina di Texarkana, in Arkansas. Una notte di fine marzo una coppia di amanti, appartatisi in auto, viene ritrovata brutalmente massacrata e la polizia brancola nel buio, non avendo la più pallida idea su chi possa essere l'autore del delitto o sul movente. Tre settimane dopo, altri due giovani innamorati vengono uccisi con le stesse modalità ma questa volta l'assassino viene intravisto dal vicesceriffo Ramsey: si tratta di un uomo bianco incappucciato. Il capitano Morales, convinto di trovarsi di fronte a un serial killer, dissemina le strade di agenti sotto copertura e auto della polizia, con la speranza di catturarlo prima di un eventuale terzo delitto.
