In una notte buia e tempestosa, una donna incappucciata abbandona un fagotto davanti alla porta di un orfanotrofio e sparisce nella pioggia. Dodici anni dopo, il piccolo Lewis aspetta ancora che qualche coppia di buon cuore si decida ad adottarlo, ma ormai di possibili genitori ne ha visti tanti e tutti sono scappati a gambe levate di fronte al suo talento d'inventore, geniale e pasticcione.
